KARACHI - Security forces patrolled Karachi Sunday after two days of violent clashes over the suspension of Pakistan 's chief justice left 36 people dead.
The government ordered extra troops into the volatile port city amid fears of more unrest sparked by President Pervez Musharraf's decision to sack chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
Two people were killed on Sunday, as city police chief Azhar Farooqi described the situation was "very tense".
Protesters blocked the main highway with burning tyres and pelted vehicles with stones, police and witnesses said.
In the latest bloodshed, a policeman was killed on Sunday in the Mangopir neighbourhood, west of Karachi.
"The assailants set his bike on fire and tortured him before shooting him from close range," police officer Shafiqur Rehman said. Another man was shot dead in a separate incident.
Police used teargas to disperse protesters blocking road, an AFP reporter on the site said.
Gunmen armed with Kalashnikov rifles and pistols roamed the volatile southern port city throughout Saturday, torching vehicles and clashing with supporters of Chaudhry.
Chaudhry, who has become a focal point for opponents of military ruler Musharraf, was forced to scrap plans to address thousands of people in Karachi and had to fly back to the capital, Islamabad.
The president blamed Chaudhry's supporters for politicising the issue.
"Stop agitation if you are patriots, if you have love for the people and if you have the same pain for the deaths of people in Karachi," Musharraf told thousands of ruling party workers at his own rally in Islamabad late Saturday.
Musharraf removed Chaudhry from his post on March 9 on charges including that he obtained promotions for his son, sparking two months of protests by lawyers and opposition secular and hardline Islamic parties.
After several rallies were tear-gassed in March, the judge's supporters were relatively quiet until he was greeted by tens of thousands of people last weekend in the eastern city of Lahore. Pro-Musharraf parties responded Saturday by calling a counter-demonstration in Karachi to coincide with Chaudhry's speech and blocking his route from the airport.
Intense gunbattles erupted in several areas, including near the airport, leaving at least 34 people dead and more than 100 injured, while activists torched dozens of vehicles.
Officials said most of the dead were from the Pakistan People's Party of exiled former premier Benazir Bhutto and also included a policeman and a paramedic.
Private Aaj television, which has come under pressure from the government for its allegedly pro-chief justice stance, showed footage of gunmen firing at its office in Karachi and of its correspondents diving for cover.
New York-based Human Rights Watch said Musharraf's government and its allies had apparently "deliberately sought to foment violence in Karachi," adding that police stood by as "silent spectators."
One opposition party has called a strike for Monday when Chaudhry is due to attend the latest in a series of Supreme Court hearings into the legality of the charges against him, which he denies.
Opponents say army chief Musharraf sacked the independent-minded Chaudhry unconstitutionally in a bid to hobble the judiciary and make it easier to be re-elected as president by the current parliament before his five-year term runs out in November.

KHOST, Afghanistan - Around 55 Taliban militants were killed in two separate battles with Afghan and international forces in eastern Afghanistan, a governor told AFP Sunday.
Up to 40 were killed in a battle on Saturday in Paktika province's Gayan district, close to the border with Pakistan , provincial governor Mohammad Akram Ikhpolwak said.
Fifteen others were killed in similar fight on Saturday in adjoining Barmal district, also on the border, he said.
The toll was the highest in the region since NATO-led and Afghan forces in January bombed groups of militants spotted crossing from Pakistan , killing 150 of them.
On Saturday in Barmal, "A big number of the Taliban came from Pakistan with the aim of attacking. We retaliated and killed up to 15 of them. The rest crossed back to Pakistan ," Ikhpolwak said.
"We killed around 40 Taliban in Gayan district the same day," he said. "Foreign forces helped with air support," he added.
Afghan and Western officials have heaped pressure on Pakistan to do more to stop militants from crossing into Afghanistan to take part in a growing insurgency aimed at toppling the government of President Hamid Karzai.
The rebel campaign was launched months after the Taliban regime was driven from power in a US-led operation after it refused to surrender Al-Qaeda allies blamed for the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.
Last year was the deadliest in Afghanistan since then. About 4,000 people, mostly rebels, were killed in 2006 in insurgency-linked violence, according to officials.
